It's a very minimalist background, using only lines and silhouettes, with a touch of a light orange colour.
A lot of the shots are long distance, so Nikos Deja Vu had to use the backgrounds and layout to assist in telling the story. I think he did a good job, combining the animation with the music helped portray the emotions of the main character.
The lighting is very distinct, with low cast shadows which show what time of day it is.
